Everything Releasing On Disney Plus June 2022: Better Than Usual; Still No Walt, No Cartoons, No Catalog

StreamClues image

Where to start? Well, we should not have to praise them for doing their job, but for the first time in 2 months there are zero skipped days! Hooray! Unfortunately, it’s another step back for library after 3 months of relative “recovery.” If you want detailed analysis and our new feature, “Problems & Praise,” keep scrolling after you’ve read the list. Moving forward, we’ll be integrating our Monthly Library Breakdown into the main post!

The monthly library average has dropped for the 5th month in a row to 26.19 titles a month. We’re back in the red.

Library Breakdown

[DISNEY CHANNEL / XD] – 5

[DISNEY JUNIOR] – 3

[ESPN] – 3

[ABC / FREEFORM / FOX TV] – 3 – tied for most ever in one month since launch. A sad record, tbh.

[NAT GEO] – 2

[20TH CENTURY FILMS] – 0 – 2nd month in a row, 2nd time ever

[DISNEY FILMS] – 0 – 2nd month in a row, 2nd time ever

[RECENT SHORTS}– 0

[VINTAGE TV / SHORTS] – 0 (as always)

TOTAL LIBRARY – 16. For the fifth month in a row Disney has set a top 5 lowest of all-time amount. They tied the 4th lowest. April and May rebounded after the initial announcement. Hopefully June follows suit with 5-10 addditional library titles added.

ORIGINALS – 11

RETURNING TITLES: 0

RE-LISTED TITLES: 1 – Life Below Zero: The Next Generation (Season 3)

TOTAL ADDITIONS: 27

Leaving Disney+ June 1, 2022

We were correct last month that The Big Year would leave. This month, Horton Hears A Who will leave Disney+ and return late 2023.

X-Men Days of Future Past, The Fault in Our Stars, and The Book Of Life are nearing time to leave for HBO Pay Two. All 3 will leave before the fall.

Problems & Praise

Problem #1: Where Is The Film Catalog?

Despite not skipping any days, they still skip library titles on 2 day – both “film” Fridays. The continued negligence associated with skipping film catalog sticks out like a sore thumb. As we’ve covered TIRELESSLY, they continue not to license hundreds of films that are available to them including: Bridge to Terabithia, Dick Tracy, and Jungle Book 1994. All 3 left HBO February 28th, 2021. 2 of them remain in the Disney Vault while Dick Tracy has recently appeared on FreeVee.

Dr. Dolittle 5 and Flicka: Country Pride are streaming internationally, but after leaving HBO and Starz, they’ve been vaulted here. Disney paid 1 billion dollars to Netflix in order to pull 30 titles early. Of those, 3 remain in the vault. Those titles are: The BFG, Tini: The New Life of Violetta, and Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell. All 3 are streaming internationally. The BFG even streamed on Disney+ USA until last March when it moved to Netflix. Why won’t it return?

For the 2nd month in a row (and only 2nd month EVER), Disney is incapable of adding even ONE library Disney Pictures, Made-For-TV, or Fox film. Just none. There are thousands of films missing. The entire past decade of 20th Century Fox films are streaming internationally, but unavailable in USA. The Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures library remain untapped. Requests since launch for titles like My Date With The President’s Daughter, Parent Trap 2-4, Make Mine Music, and Model Behavior continue to fall on plugged ears.

Additional data: Over 2000 Missing Touchstone, Hollywood, and Fox Films

Removed Titles

Titles removed 2 weeks after launch (way back in 2019) remain lost: Shaggy Dog (2006) and White Wilderness. Disney continues to pile up content that had previously streamed, left for another service, and then completed that contract. Millions left Starz April 30th. Doctor Dolittle 1 and 2 leave HBO May 31st. Ramona & Beezus has still not returned from its removal last year. Everybody’s Hero remains lost after its mysterious removal. The Sandlot‘s 4th removal persists. Mrs. Doubtfire, Rio, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Eddie the Eagle, The Big Year, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked are additional Fox films Disney added and removed (sometimes multiple times) that have not returned

Additional data: All Titles Removed From Disney+ USA

Problem #2: International Back Off?

After a few months of great international surprises, only Club Mickey Mouse (Season 4) is scheduled. They list it without the missing first 3 seasons. We’re not a fan of incomplete series, as you know. But sadly, that’s the new trend. Recent additions such as Great Christmas Light Fight and Science of Stupid came with all of their earlier seasons missing. Now that we have Alex & Co, the film and the spin-off, Penny on MARS, need to arrive. Bia Season 2 has been missing for 19 months now. Binny and the Ghost has also begun an international rollout. It aired on Disney Channel many years ago, so it should come over.

Problem #3: Missing Cartoons

It’s a month of the year, so of course no missing cartoons were added. For the millionth time: Paramount has had no trouble adding the majority of their cartoons! Why does Disney refuse to add more than half of theirs? Where the heck are all the Jetix, Fox Kids, Disney XD, and One Saturday Morning cartoons?! June extended the absurd streak with no animated library to 9 months with over 20 glaring absences and about 50 cartoons missing overall.

We have said this hundreds of times but CANNOT BELIEVE all Disney Channel cartoons from past 15 years are streaming whereas only half of the Disney XD cartoons from that same period are available. On Disney+ Hotstar they have not struggled to add Disney XD shows such as Penn Zero, Stitch!, and Motorcity, as well as Disney Junior shows like Jungle Junction and Bunnytown. What is wrong with the USA content team? Not to mention the glaring absences of Two More Eggs, The 7D, House of Mouse, Lloyd in Space, Legend of Tarzan, and so many others.

Additional data: 46 Missing Cartoons

Problem #4: Where’s Walt?

As always, the legacy of Disney is ignored. New despicable records are set. June marks 1 year since the last Walt-era title – Happiest Millionaire.

Why has Disney done NOTHING to preserve Walt’s legacy?

Problem #5: Nat Geo Fell Off

We used to complain that Nat Geo dominated each month with an average of 10 titles. For some inexplicable reason January started a new era where Nat Geo is basically vacant. That’s not what we meant, folks. We meant add variety. We meant this is not Nat Geo+. We did not mean “stop adding Nat Geo.” We broke the news (it still hasn’t been covered elsewhere) that they abandoned the episode batch strategy in December 2021. That’s resulted in tons of shows being far behind. We also have noted that they are regularly skipping the Nat Geo stand-alone specials, having not added over 15 from the past year.

It’s one of their 5 primary brand tiles, but it seems like they don’t care about it anymore. We keep detailed track of the Nat Geo Library Progress, but have drawn from those tables and that data to provide this snapshot which shows just how much is missing from the past 18 months.

How do you miss THIS many specials in 1.5 years?

Recent Specials:

  • Gorongosa: Paradise Reborn (2022)
  • Home Rediscovered (2021)
  • Rise Again: Tulsa and the Red Summer (2021) (On Hulu in USA)
  • Killer High The Silent Crisis (2021) (Left Hulu in May 2022)
  • Our America: Todos Unidos (2021)
  • Mountain Strong: Surviving the Creek Fire (2021)
  • Serpent’s Surprise (2021)
  • Our America: Asian Voices (so ridiculous this wasn’t added for AAPI month) (2021)
  • Our America: Climate of Hope (2021)
  • The Last Drop (2021)
  • Mission Possible: The Race for a Vaccine (2021)
  • The March on Washington: Keepers of the Dream (2021)
  • North Korea: Inside the Mind of a Dictator (2021)
  • Launch America: Mission to Space Live (2020)
  • Butt Heads: The Strange Story of Sheep (2020)

And now that Disney strangely abandoned the batch strategy, the recent seasons of shows are also VERY far behind:

  • AFV Animal Edition (Season 2) – New episodes airing
  • Wild Fish (Season 1) – New episodes airing
  • Secrets of the Zoo: Down Under (Season 3) – New episodes airing
  • Wicked Tuna (Season 11)
  • Life Below Zero Next Generation (Season 4 and Season 1 removed this past week, Season 3 no-showed in November, is re-listed in June.)
  • Port Protection Alaska (Season 5 – 1 and 2 also missing since launch due to a mistake that licensed them exclusively to NatGeoTV.com for a very long time)
  • Wicked Tuna Outer Banks (Season 8, 2nd half missing because they forgot when they stopped batches to finish the half done one) – 2021
  • CAR SOS (Season 9) – 2021 (Aired over a year ago. Previous seasons arrived.)
  • Lost Treasures of Egypt (Season 2 skipped over when 3 arrived. Season 2 aired in 2020 and is currently stuck on NatGeoTV.com due to a licensing mistake) – 2020
  • Atlas of Cursed Places (Season 1) – Streams outside USA.
  • 9/11: One Day in America (Season 1) – Streams outside USA.

Praise #1: Pride Month Response

Unlike the ridiculed decision to skip adding content in AAPI Heritage month, Disney has shown up for Pride Month with 2 bit hits:

Glee and Love Victor. Glee is a fantastic addition to the library, but to spin a positive negatively, no additional general entertainment series are scheduled. We really hoped this new trend that began on National Streaming Day with Alias and 8 Simple Rules and The Finder would lead to more lucrative monthly changes than 1 series a month. We are pulling for: Cloak & Dagger, Malcolm in the Middle, Galavant, The Wonder Years (original), Doogie Howser, Bob’s Burger’s (to promote the new movie), American Housewife, The Nine Live of Chloe King, Kyle XY, Ugly Betty, Samantha Who, The Quest (original), Futurama, King of the Hill, Mixed-ish, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Gifted, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, and Fresh Off the Boat.

Praise #2: Some Gaps Filled

Baymax Dreams is a good addition as it continues the very slow transfer of shorts series from DisneyNow to Disney+, but to again spin a positive into a negative, why are we not getting Baymax & Mochi? It also streams on DisneyNow and has recently been added to multiple international countries. Shouldn’t the hype train for Baymax (the new original series coming June 29th) include BOTH shorts series?

Glee is a very exciting addition. It’s good to see Grown-ish and Wonder Years getting to finish the seasons they added in February. It’s odd Black-ish did not receive its update.
